What we build in South Tampa
Turf and pavers for South Tampa yards
In neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, Davis Islands and Ballast Point, the oaks are part of what makes the street. They also shade out grass, and their roots need protecting. We plan turf around tree protection zones, tie it into pavers and pool coping, and use pet turf for side yards where the dog runs. South Tampa is inside Tampa city limits, so city permit and watering rules apply.

Local rules for turf in South Tampa
Rules change, so we check them again for your address before we start. Here is what applies in South Tampa as of October 2026.
- Trees
- The City of Tampa requires tree protection zones around protected trees, and the city forester may review installs near tree roots. We lay out the turf and base around your oaks before anything is priced.Source: City of Tampa, Artificial Turf and Tree Protection per Chapter 27
- Permits
- Inside Tampa city limits, synthetic turf goes through a city permit: a site plan showing lot coverage and trees within 20 feet, plan review, and one final inspection. Turf is not allowed in the right-of-way, public easements, swales, ditches or stormwater ponds, and infill must be clean silica sand or zeolite, not rubber. A Notice of Commencement is needed when the job is over $5,000. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection for you, and the infill we use inside city limits meets the city’s rule.Source: City of Tampa Synthetic Turf Permitting Packet, 2026
- Historic districts
- If your home is in a local historic district, the City of Tampa says Historic Preservation approval may also be required for turf.Source: City of Tampa Synthetic Turf Permitting Packet, 2026
- Watering
- City of Tampa water customers are limited to one watering day a week year-round, during the current drought only between midnight and 4 AM or 8 PM and midnight.Source: City of Tampa Water Department, 2026

Good questions
Turf questions from South Tampa
Still wondering about something? Call (813) 906-5095 and you will talk to a person, or browse all our FAQs.
“Our new turf looks incredible, drains perfectly, and feels great underfoot. The pavers add the perfect touch of elegance.”
Will turf hurt my oak trees?
It should not when it is planned correctly. The City of Tampa requires protection zones around protected trees and may have the city forester review work near roots. We plan the layout and base depth around your trees and point out any area we would leave as mulch or plantings.
Does grass really not grow under South Tampa oaks?
Many yards have trouble keeping grass alive in heavy shade. Turf does not need sun or water, which is why it works well under a canopy. We still leave room for the trees to breathe.
Do I need a permit in South Tampa?
South Tampa is inside city limits, so turf goes through the City of Tampa synthetic turf permit process, and homes in a historic district may need Historic Preservation approval too.
Can you do pavers and turf together?
Yes, and that is a lot of what we do: pool decks that run into turf, stepping stones set into turf, and walkways between beds. One crew and one proposal.
How much does it cost?
Installed turf in Tampa Bay commonly runs about $8 to $18 per square foot. See our Tampa turf cost guide for what moves the price.
