How we size the safety surface
The right pad depends on how high a child can fall from. We start there and work down.
Top to bottom
- Play turf
- Foam safety pad
- Compacted base
- Graded native soil
- 1. Measure the equipment
- We measure the fall height of the play equipment on site.
- 2. Match the system
- We specify a turf-and-pad system tested for that fall height under ASTM F1292, the standard for playground surface impact.
- 3. Documentation first
- You receive the manufacturer’s test documentation for the full system before we install.
- 4. Check what is underneath
- If there is existing surfacing, we check what is under it before we price removal.
- 5. Build it to drain
- The pad goes over a compacted, draining base, with turf on top.
Included
On every job

How play areas are priced
The biggest factors are the fall height, which sets the pad, and what has to come out first. We price the turf, the pad and any removal as separate lines.
What moves the price
- Fall height of the equipment
- Pad thickness and system
- Removing mulch, sand or old rubber
- Size of the play area
- Borders and transitions
Good questions
Play areas questions
Still wondering about something? Call (813) 906-5095 and you will talk to a person, or browse all our FAQs.
What is fall height?
It is the height a child could fall from on a piece of equipment, such as the top deck of a fort. The safety surface has to be tested to protect at that height, so it is the first thing we measure.
Can you install over existing poured rubber?
Sometimes. We check what is under the rubber and how it is holding up before we recommend going over it or taking it out.
Do you work with schools and commercial properties?
Yes. We provide line-item proposals and the documentation facility teams and administrators need for their files.
Does playground turf get hot?
Turf warms up in direct sun. Cooling infill options can help, and we will talk through shade and timing for play areas that get full afternoon sun.
